September

Berlin opens the season, Amsterdam opens Kusama without her, and Lyon starts dreaming.

Yayoi Kusama died in Tokyo in mid-August, at 97. The retrospective that travelled from the Beyeler through Museum Ludwig reaches the Stedelijk on 11 September as a posthumous tribute. Berlin Art Week runs first. Lyon's biennale opens on the 19th, and Manifesta enters its final weeks in the Ruhr.

Show of the month
Yayoi Kusama in a red wig, seated in her installation Yellow Tree / Living Room, every surface covered in yellow and black tangled patterns.

11 SEPT Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam

The final stop of the retrospective that travelled from the Beyeler through Museum Ludwig, and the first major museum show of her work to open since her death in August, at 97. Two floors, seven decades, early works never before seen in Europe, and a new mirror room made for the occasion. The museum now calls it a posthumous tribute. Her studio says she painted until her final days.

Footnote
Saint-Antoine, level minus one. The Lyon Biennale's venue list includes the Saint-Antoine car park and a metro station at Part-Dieu, both free, alongside the traboules of the Croix-Rousse. The city is the plinth this year.
